Paving in McLennan County from our home office in Waco
Tar and chip and asphalt driveways, ranch roads, parking lots, repairs and sealcoating in Waco and every town around it.
Serving Waco, Central Texas, DFW and West Texas
Our home county, and two kinds of ground
Our main office is in Waco, so McLennan County is home ground. We work in Waco itself, in the fast-growing suburbs like Hewitt, Woodway, Robinson and Bellmead, and out in the farm and ranch country around McGregor, Crawford, Lorena and West.
The Balcones Fault runs southwest to northeast through the county, and it divides the ground in two. To the west, toward Woodway, McGregor and Crawford, the soils are shallow and stony, with cedar and oak and limestone close to the surface. To the east, across Bellmead and the farmland toward Mart, it’s black, waxy Blackland clay, the kind the USDA describes as high shrink-swell, cracking up to 4 inches wide in dry spells. Pavement has to be built differently on each.
McLennan County is also still farm and ranch country, with more than half a million acres in farms and ranches as of 2002. That’s why tar and chip is our specialty: for long private drives and ranch roads it gives a tough, all-weather surface at a fraction of the cost of asphalt.

Worth knowing before you pave in McLennan County
- Outside city limits, McLennan County Engineering sizes driveway culverts on county roads and installs them after you pay. If you install your own, you must call the county for a permit and inspection, and a wrong size can be ordered corrected at your expense.
- In Waco, a drive approach, curb or sidewalk needs a separate Engineering permit. A building permit doesn’t cover it.
- Waco, Hewitt and Bellmead all restrict parking on grass, and some also restrict gravel in front yards. Check with your city, or ask us, before you add parking.
- Driveways onto I-35 frontage roads, US 84, SH 6 or FM roads need a TxDOT driveway permit.

FAQ
Paving in McLennan County: common questions
Where is your Waco office?
On New Dallas Highway in Waco. Most of McLennan County is less than 30 minutes away.
Can you install a culvert with my driveway?
Yes. On county roads, McLennan County sizes culverts and either installs them or inspects ours. We coordinate it so the culvert and the driveway work together.
Is tar and chip good on Blackland clay?
On a properly built and drained base, yes. The base and drainage matter more than the surface on clay, whichever surface you choose.
