Howard County has been oil country since the Howard-Glasscock field came in in 1925, and a lot of the work here still serves the oilfield: lease roads, pad sites, equipment yards and the businesses around them. The old Webb Air Force Base is now the Big Spring Industrial Park, with its own lots and access roads to keep up.
The ground is loam over deep clay subsoils with heavy lime buildup, caliche caprock to the north and west, and limestone in places, including Scenic Mountain in Big Spring State Park. Caliche is a good, cheap base when it’s kept dry. Our job is to build it right, crown it, and seal it with chip seal or asphalt so water and heavy trucks don’t tear it apart.
