Paving in Hill & Bosque Counties from Hillsboro to the Bosque valley

Driveways, chip seal roads, ranch roads, commercial lots and repairs in Hillsboro, Clifton and the countryside around Lake Whitney.

Serving Waco, Central Texas, DFW and West Texas

Clay to the east, limestone to the west

Hill and Bosque counties sit just north of Waco on either side of Lake Whitney, and they’re as different as their geology. Hill County is split by the Austin Chalk escarpment: deep, waxy clay soils in the east and shallower ground to the west. Bosque County is Grand Prairie country, with flat-topped limestone hills and grassland valleys.

Both counties are mostly rural, with long county roads (Bosque County alone has more than 1,100 miles of public road), ranches, farms and lake properties around Lake Whitney and Lake Aquilla. That’s ideal country for tar and chip drives and ranch roads.

Water is the thing to plan for. The Bosque River floods hard where bedrock is close to the surface: in May 2024 it left Clifton surrounded by water. Culverts and drainage are part of every job we do up here.

Worth knowing before you pave here

  • In Hillsboro, a driveway entirely on private property that doesn’t tie into the curb or street doesn’t need a permit. If yours connects to the curb or street, call Hillsboro Building Inspection (254-580-1144) about a permit.
  • Hillsboro requires engineered foundations because of expansive soils. Paving on that clay needs a well-built base too.
  • Driveways onto I-35 frontage roads, SH 6, SH 22 or other state roads need a TxDOT permit.
  • Near the Bosque River and lake areas, plan culverts and drainage for heavy storms.
