Paving in the Killeen–Temple area clay on one side, limestone on the other

Driveways, parking lots, ranch roads and repairs across Bell and Coryell counties: Temple, Killeen, Belton, Troy and Gatesville. About an hour down I-35 from our Waco office.

Serving Waco, Central Texas, DFW and West Texas

Two kinds of ground in one county

The Balcones Escarpment runs right through the middle of Bell County, and it splits the area into two very different kinds of ground. East of it, around Temple and Troy, is Blackland Prairie: deep Houston Black clay that swells when it’s wet and cracks open when it dries. West of it, around Killeen, the west side of Belton and on up to Gatesville, the land turns to limestone uplands where limestone or a hard lime layer is close to the surface in many places.

That difference changes how we build. On the clay, the job is a thicker, well-compacted base and drainage that keeps water from soaking under the pavement. On the limestone side, the rock is a good foundation, but shallow rock limits how deep we can dig and makes water run off fast, so grading and edges matter more.

The area is also growing fast. The Killeen–Temple metro passed half a million people in 2024, Temple alone grew about 20% since 2020, and new subdivisions keep spreading south of Killeen and west of Temple. That means a steady stream of new driveways, parking areas for new businesses, and older lots that need repair.

Worth knowing before you pave in Bell or Coryell County

  • Killeen and Temple both require parking areas to be an all-weather surface: asphalt or concrete. Temple allows graded material on longer driveways on acreage.
  • Driveways onto a state highway (US 190 frontage roads, SH 36, SH 95, FM roads and so on) need a TxDOT driveway permit before work starts.
  • In Bell County subdivisions outside city limits, driveway culverts have to be sized for at least a 5-year storm. We size culverts so the ditch keeps flowing.
  • This is the heart of Texas Flash Flood Alley. Grading so water leaves the pavement quickly matters more here than almost anywhere.
