Paving in Belton: what’s different here

Belton sits right where Bell County changes from Blackland clay to limestone hills, so two properties a few miles apart can need very different base work. We look at the ground on every Belton job before we price it.

The lakes shape a lot of the work here. Belton Lake, north of town, and Stillhouse Hollow Lake to the southwest bring acreage, long private drives and steep approaches. On those, tar and chip is often the best value, and on the steepest pitches asphalt holds better where tires turn and brake.

Belton also knows about water: Nolan Creek flooded downtown in 1913, and Central Texas storms still dump a lot of rain at once. Culverts under rural driveways have to be sized for it, and the county’s subdivision rules call for driveway culverts that handle at least a 5-year storm.

Before you pave in Belton

  • If your driveway crosses a ditch, it will usually need a culvert. Outside city limits, Bell County subdivision rules call for culverts sized for at least a 5-year storm.
  • Bell County’s subdivision rules call for driveway openings on TxDOT roads to be at least 150 feet apart, and TxDOT has final approval of driveway locations.
  • Lake properties often have steep grades: ask whether the steepest stretch should be asphalt even if the rest is chip seal.
  • Check with the City of Belton about permits for work in the street right-of-way.

FAQ

Paving in Belton: common questions

What’s the best surface for a long drive near Belton Lake?

Usually tar and chip: tough, good grip, drains well and far cheaper per foot than asphalt. If part of the drive is steep, we often pave that part in asphalt.

Do I need a culvert for my driveway in Belton?

If the driveway crosses a roadside ditch, yes. We size it so the ditch keeps flowing in a heavy storm, which also keeps water out from under your driveway.

Do you also work in Salado and Morgan’s Point?

Yes, we work all around Belton, including Morgan’s Point Resort and Salado.
