Farm country on clay
East and southeast of Waco, Limestone and Falls counties are farm and ranch country with small county seats. Mexia grew up in a 1920s oil boom, Groesbeck sits near Lake Limestone and Fort Parker State Park, and Marlin, on the Brazos side, was a hot-springs resort town for half a century.
Most of the ground is clay. Falls County is Blackland Prairie, more than 70% upland clay and loam, and the Limestone County soil survey flags low strength, shrink-swell and very slow permeability as the main problems for building. For pavement that means a solid base, crown, and culverts sized for real storms.
Out here, many of our jobs are long: farm entrances, private roads and acreage drives, where tar and chip gives an all-weather surface at a price that makes sense over a long distance.

Worth knowing before you pave here
- Mexia requires a city driveway/culvert permit with a site plan, and culverts must be galvanized steel sized by the Building Inspector.
- Driveways onto US 84, SH 14, SH 6, SH 7 or other state roads need a TxDOT permit.
- Clay soils with very slow permeability mean the base and culverts matter more than the surface.
- Long rural drives are where tar and chip saves the most compared with asphalt.
