Paving in Hewitt: what’s different here

Hewitt went from a railroad stop with fewer than 100 residents in the 1960s to more than 16,000, growing faster than anywhere else in McLennan County during the 1980s as families moved out from Waco into the Midway school district. Hewitt takes parking seriously. The city bans parking on grass or gravel, with some exceptions (a 2018 report put the maximum Class C fine at $500). Police there have pointed out that asphalt and concrete are also safer in a dry summer, since cars parked on dry grass can start fires. A paved pad beside the driveway solves both problems.
