Paving in Temple: what’s different here
Temple was nicknamed “Mud Town” when it was founded as a railroad junction in 1881, and anyone who has dug a hole here knows why. The town sits on Houston Black clay, the classic Blackland Prairie soil. The USDA describes it as having high shrink-swell potential, with cracks up to 4 inches wide in dry spells, and water barely soaks in once it’s wet.
Pavement on that clay fails from below. When the ground swells and shrinks under it, asphalt cracks, and once water gets through the cracks the base softens. We build Temple jobs with a properly compacted base, crown and slope to move water off, and edges that don’t leave the clay exposed.
Temple is also growing fast, up about 20% since 2020 to nearly 100,000 people. The new Outer Loop on the west side has opened up neighborhoods and business sites along Research Parkway and beyond, and there are industrial parks across town. That means new driveways, new commercial lots, and plenty of older lots ready for repair and restriping.

Before you pave in Temple
- Temple requires off-street parking to be paved with asphalt or concrete. Longer driveways on acreage may qualify for graded material.
- Concrete flatwork needs a building permit from the city.
- TxDOT plans to extend I-14 along Loop 363 from I-35 to SH 95. Access to properties along that stretch may change, so check before you build.
- On Blackland clay, ask any contractor how they’ll handle the base and drainage. That’s where most failures start.

FAQ
Paving in Temple: common questions
Why does asphalt crack so much in Temple?
The Houston Black clay under most of Temple swells when wet and shrinks when dry. A thin base on that clay moves with it. A thicker compacted base, good drainage and crack sealing keep it in check.
Can I use gravel for my driveway in Temple?
Inside city limits, off-street parking needs to be asphalt or concrete. The city says longer driveways on acreage may qualify for graded material, which is where tar and chip often makes sense.
Do you work on commercial sites in Temple?
Yes, from small office lots to industrial yards. We plan the base for the loads and get water off the site.
