Things to Do in Mexia TX

In Limestone County, TX, Mexia was named after General José Antonio Mexía, a Mexican hero who was part of the Republic of Texas Army during the Texas Revolution. The town was founded near his estate. The city has a unique motto, based on the fact that outsiders tend to mispronounce the name: “A great play to live, no matter how you pronounce it.”

Initially, it was founded as a town in the 19th century when inhabitants had occupied the Fort Parker area along the Navasota River, extremely close to where the great plains’ rolling hills begin. It was an excellent place for grazing buffalo herds. Meix’s first post office began operation in 1872, and a mayoral form of government followed. A large natural gas deposit was found in 1912, leading to the Mexia oilfield being discovered in 1920 and a huge local boom.

The area is known for Fort Parker State Park, a great camping spot with a charming large lake in the middle, great for day trips or weekend camping. The Lake Mexia Marina is an excellent place for lake access, so you can go out on it in your boat, but picnic tables in the area let you bring the whole family. Multiple other regional parks are complete with your time, as Mexia is known for its great outdoors.
