Paving in Grand Prairie: what’s different here
Grand Prairie is one of the cities we hear from most, and one where it pays to know the rules. The city requires a permit for every residential driveway approach, regardless of size. Approaches in the right-of-way have to be at least 6 inches of 4,000 PSI concrete with rebar. Front driveways can be concrete, or asphalt at 4 inches of hot-mix over a 4-inch base. New gravel or crushed-stone driveways aren’t allowed, and you can’t park in the yard unless it’s on asphalt or concrete.
That means a driveway here has to be built properly from the start, which suits us. We build asphalt driveways to the city’s 4-inch over 4-inch standard, pour concrete approaches to spec, and handle the permit with you.
The ground needs the same care. Dallas County’s geology includes Eagle Ford shale, which engineers flag for high swelling potential and high sulfate content. Creeks like Kirby, Cottonwood and Fish Creek and the West Fork of the Trinity move a lot of water through town, so drainage is part of every job.

FAQ
Paving in Grand Prairie: common questions
Can I have an asphalt driveway in Grand Prairie?
Yes. The city allows asphalt front driveways built with at least 4 inches of hot-mix asphalt over a 4-inch base. The approach in the right-of-way still has to be reinforced concrete.
Can I put down gravel instead?
Not for a new residential driveway. Grand Prairie’s code doesn’t allow new gravel or crushed-stone residential driveways.
How long does the permit take?
The city says residential approach permits usually take 5 to 10 business days. We plan the schedule around it.
