Paving in the Permian Basin from our Big Spring office
Lease and ranch roads, equipment yards, commercial lots and driveways in Big Spring, Midland and across Howard and Midland counties.
Serving Waco, Central Texas, DFW and West Texas
Built for oil country
Out here the work is different from Central Texas. The Permian Basin is high, flat, dry country, and much of the paving we do serves the oilfield: lease roads, pad sites, equipment and truck yards, and the shops, offices and housing that go with them. Midland grew into the region’s oil headquarters after the 1920s discoveries, and Howard County’s oil history goes back to 1925.
The ground is sandy and loamy over caliche, a hard lime layer that has long been the cheap local road base. Caliche makes a solid base when it’s dry, but it weakens when it stays wet, so drainage and a sealed surface are what make a road last. A chip seal or asphalt surface over a well-built caliche base keeps water out and dust down.
The weather is hard on pavement too: strong sun and heat most of the year, spring hail and dust storms, and freezes from about mid-November to early April. Sealcoating and crack sealing go a long way in this climate.

Worth knowing before you pave in the Permian Basin
- In Midland, any driveway, curb or sidewalk work on public property needs a city permit and a bond, and driveway approaches must be at least 6 inches thick.
- Howard County and Midland County both issue driveway permits for county roads. Ask before you cut in a new entrance.
- Driveways onto I-20 frontage roads and state highways need a TxDOT driveway permit.
- Caliche base is strong dry and weak wet. Drainage and a sealed surface are what keep it strong.

FAQ
Paving in the Permian Basin: common questions
Do you have a local office out here?
Yes. Our Big Spring office on the South Service Road serves Big Spring, Midland and the Permian Basin, so you’re dealing with a local crew.
Can you pave lease roads and pad sites?
Yes. We build and seal lease roads, yards and pad sites for heavy truck traffic, with chip seal or asphalt over a proper base.
Is chip seal good on caliche?
Yes, and it’s one of the best ways to protect a caliche road: it seals out water, stops the dust and gives trucks grip.
