What Is Tar & Chip?
Tar & Chip is synonymous with 'chip sealing'. It is like asphalt since combines hot-liquid asphalt cement, liquid A/C or hot tar which are used as a binder, and gravel which is used as the main structural ingredient. The components of Tar & Chip, however, are not premixed at an asphalt plant like asphalt is, but are delivered separately to each job-site. Additionally, Tar & Chip possesses some distinct and outstanding advantages over asphalt which are briefly outlined, below.
When paving and resurfacing projects are in order on private residences or public domains, Tar & Chip is a leading choice for:
Because the inherent benefits of Tar & Chip are undisputed, county and DOT road crews opt for this product, over asphalt, in virtually every state, from coast to coast.
Advantages of Tar & Chip Over Asphalt
Tar & Chip has proven itself as a leading contender in the resurfacing and paving industry. It has been utilized the world over for more than a century! There are many important reasons why Tar & Chip has positioned itself with such success and popularity in the United States as well as other countries around the world, when compared to asphalt. Those reasons, include the following:
Compared to the generic, utilitarian look of asphalt, Tar and Chip provides a rich, rustic appearance with the look and feel of a country, gravel road.
The savings of Tar & Chip over asphalt is quite stunning. The initial cost of installing Tar & Chip can be up to 40% less than a comparable asphalt installation.
There is never a need to seal-coat Tar and Chip. Asphalt, on the other hand, requires seal-coating every few years. Virtually zero-maintenance, also, means less expense throughout the life of any Tar & Chip installation.
The smoother finish of asphalt lends itself to becoming more slippery in wet weather; but the rough, gritty, textured surface of Tar & Chip provides enhanced traction. This is especially important on driveways, for example, with steeper inclines.
Tar & Chip's light-colored stone surface does not absorb heat like blacktop does, which allows it to remain noticeably cooler.
Tar & Chip does not need a 24 to 48 hour wait time to harden. You can drive on Tar & Chip almost immediately! Tar & Chip goes down much faster than asphalt with almost no down-time.
Installing Tar & Chip
Once prep work is completed, a coat of liquid A/C is applied to the work surface through the use of some interesting technology. A computer controlled distributor truck uses its spray bars to apply a precise amount of liquid A/C, set to an exact temperature. Next, cleaned and crushed chip-stone is evenly spread onto the hot liquid asphalt where adhesion quickly takes place. Lastly, a heavy roller permanently embeds the stone into the tar. When multiple courses are needed, the entire process is repeated.
