Advantages of Gravel Driveways

The advantages of gravel driveways are worth some serious consideration.  A few of those advantages are as follows:

  • The most cost-effective medium for driveway installation
  • Low-level upkeep
  • No downtime since the driveway can be used during installation
  • An easy transition to asphalt, at any time, and
  • Surprising longevity
The Longevity of Gravel Driveways

A properly-installed gravel driveway can last up to 10 years as long as it is part of a regular-maintenance regime.  Maximized longevity will depend on the number of slopes and curves included, the integrity of the sub-grade and the environment's typical climate.

Comparing Gravel Driveway Materials

Even though gravel driveways cater to property owners who desire the lowest up-front cost, one can select from different materials to create unique color combinations and striking designs.

Crushed limestone, shale, gravel, pea gravel and granite are, all, options for gravel-driveway installation that will meet various aesthetic options.

Each type of gravel has its own distinct look; and each will compliment different styles of landscaping and architecture.  Additionally, different types of gravel offer varying degrees of strength and integrity.

Various gravel types include:

  • Crushed Stone: which is carefully screened and sized; and can be comprised of limestone, granite, gneiss, or trap rock.  Typical coloring includes blends of grays and whites.
  • Washed Clean Stone: is much like crushed stone with the exception that this material is thoroughly cleaned of impurities.
  • Pea Gravel: is popular due to its noticeable good looks involving a small, smooth, round appearance.  Pea gravel is available in a wide array of colors where beautiful flecks of reds, greens, blues, tans etc. are naturally embedded.
  • Yellow, Jersey Shore Gravel: is a very small aggregate where white, yellows, gold's, tans and browns offer eye-catching appeal.  This material lends itself to a smoother, gentler ride as well as promoting a tranquil, outdoor ambiance.
  • White Marble Chips: are often embedded with contrasting streaks of gray, providing for a driveway that will 'pop'.  One will notice a shimmering type of sheen when exposed to sunlight which adds a touch of distinctive elegance.
  • Quarry Process: is a combination of crushed stone with jagged edges and stone dust.  The rough edges allow for optimized adhesion with one another, while the dust serves to fill spaces between larger pieces.  Quarry process material is known for its dependable stability and being universally conducive to compliment any landscaping due to its gray and black color combinations.
The Gravel Driveway Installation Process

Properly preparing the base and layering the stones in a particular order for a gravel driveway is crucial.  To ensure optimal performance, longevity and aesthetics, Prime Asphalt incorporates three stone layers on top of the soil; and each layer is tampered down with a mechanical roller or tamping machine.

Gravel Driveway Installation Steps Include
  • Removing layer of topsoil and organic debris.  The topsoil contains organic matter that would create a spongy, unstable subsurface.  The layer beneath the topsoil, known as 'hardpan' is dense and hard.
  • The base is graded and leveled.  Proper grading will include the formation of a slightly higher middle section to ensure proper water run-off, especially in areas that receive a good deal of rain or snow.
  • Adding a geotextile weed barrier or herbicide prior to any stone application would address weed control.
  • Adding larger-diameter, base-ball sized, machine-crushed stone – this size forms a strong foundation and ensures good drainage.  This layer will be about 4 inches deep.
  • Adding smaller-diameter, golf-ball-sized stones, about 3 to 4 inches deep – these rocks perform a similar function as the larger-diameter rock.
  • Adding angular gravel, often mixed with stone dust and smaller pieces of rock which creates a cement-like bond, when compacted.

If an existing gravel driveway indicates an unstable sub-grade, the soil should be excavated; and a new base or structural material should be added to ensure the new gravel installation will provide optimized dependability and long-lasting performance.
